Valentine's Day is an important day for many people. On this day, love and symbols of love are celebrated. Romance is at an all time high and though not a traditional holiday, it is one of the only in existence to celebrate the togetherness of a couple in love. However, is this what makes Valentine's Day so special or is it something else, entirely? The origin of Valentine's Day can be traced back for centuries. Symbols like Cupid have been a modern symbol of lovers and relationships for equally as long.
While originally Valentine's Day was created by the church as a day for celebration and to bring attention to the church and away from other religions, today Valentine's Day has strayed from the original origins and is celebrated by all people. Valentine's Day is important for a number of reasons. The first being that no matter what is going on in the world, it offers a universal day of love. Valentine's Day offers a new day to appreciate the people you surround yourself with.
This is your chance to show them you love them with presents, actions, and kind words. In Ancient Rome artifacts of devotion and love, such as poetry and gifts would have been bestowed upon a persons lovers but not their wife. Often, marriages were a matter of convenience or necessity based on power, but rarely were they to demonstrate a romantic love, as celebrated in Valentine's Day. For this reason, in Ancient times, a man would celebrate his romantic and passionate feelings with his lovers and leave the companionship in his marriage. Obviously today things have changed.
If a man is married, his wife is usually his only romantic lover. As time moved on, Valentine's moved into being a primary holiday for people in relationships as opposed to being for everyone. For women that are with men who are not normally romantic, Valentine's Day represents a day where her man might open his romantic side to please her. He might go out of his way to make her smile and to romance her while he has the chance.
Relationships grow closer on Valentine's Day because people are not afraid to say what they think or tell what they want. Rather than taking your lover for granted you give your all, on this one day of the year. Of course, it goes without saying that some people do not like Valentine's Day. People without lovers or relationships might find it a hard day to get through.
However, it was never intended to be a day that isolated someone. Valentine's Day can be celebrated by friends and family as well as by lovers. You do not have to love someone romantically to make them feel special on Valentine's Day. Take this Valentine's Day to show the people that mean the most to you how much they mean to you. Whether you write everyone poems of love and devotion or send them cards and flowers, showing how you feel will not only be appreciated, the gesture will likely be reciprocated by the people who love you most, as well.
